Everything Else

This morning, the top bar turned a dark shade of gray — 45/45/45 RGB. I guess they decided it needed some contrast, since generally Google user interfaces are light and airy. Nothing wrong with that, though. I notice that the bar shows up in all main Google features except Gmail, at least so far. I’d be surprised if they left it off of Gmail, though. It’s probably just a matter of time.

I wonder if this same idea will be applied across the board to other Google products like Scholar. It seems a little spotty for them to apply the update to only selected products, and not all of them. But I give it a week at most for everything to be updated.

Just realized that michael@lensflarevideos goes to nowhere. If you had tried to email this between about a month or two ago and now, it bounced. Sorry if this confused you! It is now fixed.

As someone who tends to fix a lot of technology, I often get compliments. No surprises, eh? I’m not puffing my chest here, it just sort of happens. People who don’t work with technology are often dazzled by the knowledge and activities of those of us who do work with it. It’s a nice feeling, but I don’t see that as a milestone or achievement or anything like that. You run a garage, you know all about cars. You’re a doctor, you can name a million body parts that I don’t know. I happen to be a programmer, I know things that you don’t. It’s no big deal. YouTube has had an unanticipated effect on the internet experience. Any seasoned user of the online video sharing service knows that the minute a video barely starts to get controversial, the comments section of that video heats up like an ignited can of gasoline. Briefly looking over the content of comments, one acquires a sense of the contrasting viewpoints in the world. It’s a haven for brutal argument, immaturity, and opinions – no doubt an important example of the effect technology has on stereotypes. More
